Former Union minister and tribal leader Arvind Netam on Thursday resigned from the Congress, citing neglect of tribal leaders by the party. Netam, who heads the tribal outfit Sarva Adivasi Samaj (SAS), expressed disappointment with the Congress's poor implementation of the PESA (Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act in Chhattisgarh. He resigned on World Tribal Day, emphasising the weakening of PESA, which grants tribal communities rights over resources. SAS plans to contest in 50 of 90 seats in the upcoming Chhattisgarh assembly elections. Netam mentioned discussions with CPI, CPM, and BSP for alliances, ruling out a tie-up with the AAP, media reports said.
